An Online Resource for Schools

Learn About Seaside Holidays in the Past

Children playing on the beach

This website provides free downloadable resources for Key Stage 1 teachers, based on QCA Schemes of Work History Unit 3 'What were seaside holidays like in the past?' and Geography Unit 4 'Going to the Seaside'. Most of the resources are scanned copies of original photographs and pictures from the early 19th century to the 1970s of West Sussex seaside resorts, plus some text documents.

Eight main topics are covered: Getting There, What to Wear, On the Beach, In the Water, On the Water, Piers, Holiday Camps and Souvenirs. Each topic has between 8 and 12 images plus Teachers' Notes. The Source Gallery has all of the above resources, plus around 50 more images, all searchable by keyword.

The project has been organised and researched by staff at West Sussex County Council Library Service and local teachers, and the website is hosted by the West Sussex Grid for Learning. Click on 'About' for further information.

You are welcome to view, download, save, adapt and print any of the sources and resources on this site for classroom or private use free of charge. To re-publish any material, you need our written permission as described on our Copyright page below.

Further online local history resources for educational use can be found via the links below, in particular the Moodle e-learning platform has Child labour and Transport courses, and the WSGfL has Victorian West Sussex.
